What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Kindred in Christ,
As we continue in our worship series, Let Us Pray, one of my favorite hymns, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, comes to mind. It was originally written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855. It serves as a reminder of the power of prayer in our lives.
Whatever burdens or griefs you may carry at this time, I invite you to read the poem below, and open yourself to the mysterious and sustaining connection of the Risen One with you.
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
And what a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Alongside you,
Rev. Paul Ortiz
